Aircraft Scrap – Is it worth to rebuild aircraft like Cessna 172 from salvage yards to a full flying plane? airframe will be coming from scrap yards. engine will be a secondhand working unit. everything else will be secondhand like instruments. BTW it will be rebuilt by a company that specializes in aircraft rebuilt projects. Or is it just gonna cost me more than buying a second hand? Thanks.
Iffy… requires that the parts are carefully inspected to be sure they are not tweaked or have internal damage…. There are also serial number issues that can arise when you mix n match parts from different airplanes, meaning the parts may look good, but be slightly different and NOT fit or work properly… bottom line – there are LOTS of ways such a project can go south, and cost TONS of money…. Great if you have a lot of experience, access to tools and equipment and information, otherwise not so much…
it depends on how much work needs to be done, and how much work you can do yourself. even buying used parts are going to be costly, and paying an A&P rated mechanic to do the work………… well lets hope that you have access to a hefty trust fund. on the other hand, if you are either learning to do the work, or are able to do the work needed, hiring an A&P mechanic to check your work is going to be a lot less costly. in the end however you have to gage whether the money you will spend is worth the effort to resurrect a derelict airplane. the first question you have to ask is what is your intention for this aircraft? you want to learn? are you going to keep it a long time and learn to fly in it? are you wanting to fix it up to turn a profit? your best bet would be to find a flyable, but high time 172, and refurbish it as it will need far less than one from a salvage yard.

According to Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft, the C-172 has a wing root chord dimension of 5 feet 4 inches and a wing tip chord dimension of 3 feet 8.5 inches. Some models of the C-172 wing have a NACA 2412 airfoil which means that the maximum wing thickness would be 12% of the chord, or in this case, 7 11/16″. (7.68″) As for average length of the chord, you’d have to know how much of the wing is tapered and do some math. How cramped would the backseat of a Cessna 172 be for two full size adults? I calculated it and weight & balance would be within limits, but in terms of passenger comfort, would they fit in the back seat? One adult is 200 the other 180. They are both 6 ft.

It’s not much different from the back seat of a small 2-door car. How tolerable this situation is will depend on the length of the trip, in both the car and the plane.

You cannot do it from San Diego. Most such ferry flights are made from Camarillo or Santa Barbara. It requires special tankage and permits. It’s a non-stop flight. Hire a company such as Southern Cross to do it. It isn’t cost effective to try and do it on your own. The other alternative is to disassemble and ship it by sea then reassemble it. That’s how most light aircraft are shipped to Hawaii.
Direct and fixed costs for operating a Cessna 172? just all costs relating to a cessna 172 just the actual costs not actual prices, i will source them myself so for example i know a direct cost would be petrol, and overhauls and such, but im new to this so i dont know everything sources would be good as well it would be great if a c172 owner could post his spreadsheet of costs

It cost me about $60 an hour to run my 172… That price does not include the fixed costs (insurance and hanger) But simply to run the engine..
Why not go to the airport and talk to some 172 owners? At school we’re getting, more or less by osmosis, a good grounding in the realities of owning and operating one’s own plane. Several embryonic partnerships are starting to take shape, since this is the preferred way to own a plane for most people. Which 172, BTW? They first flew in 1955, are still made today, and have been made in 20-odd different versions. The operating cost of a late 1970s 172N is going to be very different from a brand new 172SP, and will be different from a 172A that’s been flying since 1960.
